Cigars and the SCHIP Tax Update

I may have been guilty of a little fear-mongering the last time I posted about Cigars and SCHIP. It looks like imports of premium cigars were up 2.63% in May as compared to last year.

Preium cigar sales have also remained steady or have slightly increased in May 2009 when compared to May 2008.

Two of the worlds largest Cigar parent companies, Swedish Match and Imperial Tobacco are claiming that sales are either flat or holding steady or have slightly increased from the period April 1 to June 30.

Good news for the sellers and manufacturers, but that doesn't change the fact that prices have gone up everywhere on the internet and in brick and mortar tobacco shops. Cigars, as a whole, are a good that never goes down in price so increased federal taxes just tend to pile on.

So it seems the collapse of the cigar industry has not taken place as expected, and here's to better news in the future!
